Wolves bite Bees ….
Bees maintained top spot on the league, but now winning the championship depends on others dropping points. Bees started slowly and were 2 nil down after 4 minutes.
Within a minute Bees had conceded a soft opener to the visitors when they failed to clear and the Wolves striker slotted into the corner of the net when 1 on 1 with the unguarded keeper. Wolves doubled their lead when they won a corner on the right hand side and the ensuing corner was flicked in at the near post. On the 24th and 27th minutes Cam Griffiths was put clear on the right and on both occasions he shot early, but dragged his shots tantalisingly wide of the far post. Bees were now in the ascendancy , but couldn’t find the breakthrough their possession warranted. The killer blow was delivered on the stroke of half time when Wolves scored with an unstoppable lob from 25yds, leaving Joe Hill in the Bees goal stranded.
Bees started the 2nd half strongly and within a couple of minutes Jacob Lowes’ 20yd lob, following a superb diagonal through ball from Matt Barrett, was tipped onto the crossbar by the visitors’ keeper and cleared to safety. The home team dominated the 2nd half with the away team creating few chances to increase their lead, but it wasn’t until the 67th minute when Bees had the opportunity to reduce the deficit when a Bees shot was handled just inside the area. Matt Barrett calmly powered the resultant penalty into the back of the net. Bees sensed a comeback and 3minutes later Seb Gay benefited from a rebound off the goalkeeper and calmly slotted the ball home from the edge of the box into the far corner for his 1st ever goal for the Bees. Bees continued to press hard for an equaliser in stoppage time but were left to rue their early lapses in concentration at the start of the match.
