PENALTY HEARTACHE FOR DOMINANT BEES

The two previous league meetings between these two teams had been very close affairs and this league cup semi-final proved no different. Bees were dealt a blow just before the match when star centre half Sam Rowell had to pull out with a bad back. Nevertheless the Bees started well and after only 2 minutes Bees forged probably the best chance of the game from a Jasper Bates cross as the ball fell to Dylan King in the box with only the keeper to beat from 4 yards but his shot was straight at the keeper and gratefully saved. The game then evened out with both teams winning and losing the ball in midfield and it became a game of cat and mouse with no real chances being created. After 20mins midfielder Joe Wright had a great shot from distance well saved and the rebound fell to man of the match Ethan Tanner who narrowly fired over. At this point in the game the Bees were beginning to get on top. The pressure nearly told just before half time when Wright swung a corner in but Ben Sparks shot went narrowly the wrong side of the post. (HT 0-0)

The second half was another tense affair but Bees held the dominance throughout in terms of team-lay and chance creation. Straight from the off Bates tested the goal with a long range effort that just went over. It was not all one way though and Fordingbridge were often quick on the break but most of their forays into the Bees half were swept up well by keeper Henry Brown. On the offensive again the Bees combined well down the right flank when full-back Charlie Taylor ran on to a great ball from Tanner but his shot was just wide. The Bees were totally dominant without creating much more and in the very last minute could have thrown it away when they let the visitors centre free on the edge of the box to shoot towards the top corner of the home goal and it took a world class save from Henry Brown to take the tie to penalties. (FT 0-0)

Unfortunately for the Bees the visitors were much better at the art of taking penalties and the boys crashed out of this years’ cup competition 0-3 on penalties. That said though this was a great performance from the boys and one that they should build on in the upcoming games. (FT 0-0, pens 0-3)
