Braishfield hoping to go one step further than last season when they lost against Eldon Celtic in the semi final, took on 2015 winners Reading Pumas in the County Cup at Sherfield English on Saturday.
The home team started strongly, but against the run of play on 5mins Pumas took the lead when Braishfield failed to clear beyond the edge of the box and a low shot found its way back into the corner of the net to make it 1 nil. Braishfield almost equalised on 12 mins when Jack Nicholas broke down the right flank and the visitors’ keeper rushed out of his area to block, however Nicolas squared the ball to Sam Briggs whose shot was blocked on the line for a corner. The 1st half remained a very even affair with only a handful of chances falling to either team, however with 5 mins remaining cam Griffiths was floored in the box for what appeared appeared to be a stonewall penalty, however the referee turned down the home team’s appeals. Griffiths carried on the protest, only to find his name in the book. With a couple of minutes remaining Griffiths had his low angle drive pushed around the post by the Pumas keeper.
After a very frank half time team talk the home team upped their game to dominate the 2nd half, however this was not before Aidan Nicholls starting his 1st match in the Braishfield goal kept out the Pumas on 48mins when faced with a one on one situation 3 mins into the 2nd half.
However, on 48 mins Callum Crotty received the ball 25yds out and his curling left foot shot whistled just over the crossbar with the keeper stranded. With 22 mins remaining Braishfield started to turn the screw and following their finally beating the visitors offside trap there was a goalmouth scramble resulting in the ball being twice cleared off the line before Nicholas prodded home from close range. Braishfield deservedly took the lead 2 mins later when Jack Darnton and Griffiths combined well on the left finding Will Johnson whose cross shot beat the keeper to make it 2.1. The East Berks Academy team visibly wilted and the game was effectively over on 65 mins when Crotty won the ball on the right and found Griffiths whose vicious shot could only be parried into the net by the Pumas keeper. Griffiths got his 2nd and Braishfield’s 4th with 10 mins remaining as confusion reigned in the Reading penalty box and Griffiths slotted home. Crotty almost made it 5 on 72 mins when played thru on the right and his shot from the edge of the box rebounded off the crossbar.
Braishfield ended as worthy winners and go into the draw for the next round and they entertain Alderbury on Saturday when they commence the defence of their League title.
